I didn't limit the amount of family member who were able to attend. We would start out having a few songs. There were always children there, so we sang fun songs for them. We played games, and even had door prizes. Great food was catered, and then we had the memorial service. A very special time for each family to have their loved ones name mentioned, and they lit a candle in memory of them. We had the lights down low, and at the end the room was filled with the light of the loved ones. It was so awesome, but it was also a way for people to enter the holiday season.

THINK ABOUT COLOR. Lime green may be in these days, but if I wear this color I look like I need a blood transfusion. Orange doesn't look any better on me. Besides, who wants to look like walking fruit? Years ago, navy blue was my travel color choice, but this color has almost disappeared.

THINK ABOUT SCALE. Many women don't look good in clothes that are printed with huge flowers, animals, or repeat designs. Large prints like these are out of scale for our height and weight. Please think about pattern scale when you're designing clothes for women.

THINK ABOUT BASICS. I don't want a dirndl skirt that makes me look like an escapee from an ethnic dance troupe. Admittedly, my fashion choices are influenced by the fact that I live in the Midwest. Midwesterners are practical and, while we like to look fashionable, we buy clothes that last for several seasons. We also buy clothes we can layer in case the weather changes.

In elderly patients 10% loss of weight is significant and may be an indicator that they are on a downhill trajectory. That is why weight loss is one of the criteria for patients to enter hospice care. This weight loss will not be reversed with supplements or medications. Weight loss occurs for a amount of reasons. They may not feel hungry or may have trouble swallowing. Sometimes eating makes them feel ill and food tastes are altered by the medications that they are taking. Regardless of the reason, if they are in their final months of life, feeding them more or different foods will not make them live longer and may instead, them more uncomfortable. Most patients in their final months are also weaker. Infirmity may begin with having mystery arising from the chair as their thigh muscle is often the first to grow weak. This Infirmity progresses from their needing assistance with walking to being chair bound and then to being bed bound. Often families will insist that they be seen by a bodily therapist to "get them walking again." If they are truly in their final months, this will not work.

Another sign that they are in the final months of life is that they fabricate infections. Elderly patients tend to get infections in the bladder and lung. As swallowing becomes difficult, they may cough and inhale liquids into their lungs causing bronchitis or pneumonia. This is called aspiration and is often seen in patients in the final months of life. Antibiotics will work initially but will have less power with repeated infections. Aspiration, once started, often reoccurs. Salvage depends on the compel of their cough but because their lungs are weakened, their cough is ineffective. For this reason, pneumonia is the amount one cause of hospitalization and death in patients who are in nursing homes.

Losing someone is painful. We never feel ready for the loss. Several years ago the tree became diseased. We called a tree expert and he injected the tree with chemicals. But the disease continued to spread. Again, we had the tree injected and the crew covered the damaged area with wire mesh to discourage woodpeckers. All of these efforts failed.

"It's going to fall down," the tree expert said. "I don't know when, but I'm worried about it falling on your house." My husband and I worried even more about the tree falling on other houses. We didn't want to cut the tree down, but had no choice.

The tree crew, four strong men wearing hardhats, arrived at 7:15 a.m. with a cherry picker truck. They had to wait for a rain storm to pass before they could start work. Forty-five minutes later, the crew leader, holding a chain saw in his hands, waved to us from the cherry picker. Hovering over the top of the tree, he cut one branch, and then another.

All day, we heard grinding chain saws and the thud of branches. The ground crew sawed the branches into logs. In removing the tree we were removing history, a link with the settlers who had the courage to come here, and live off the land. How would the yard look without the tree? What would our lives be like?

"The logs are so heavy that we have to lift them out with a crane," the company owner said. "It will be here soon." The crane parked in front of the house and the operator swung its arm over the roof. "Watch out for the chimney!" the owner exclaimed. Now we were really nervous.

Neighbors came by to see the crane in action. As the sun dipped lower in the sky the log pile grew higher. The pile was so large that traffic had to be diverted around it. The crane hoisted the logs into a truck and they were taken away. The job was done. We went out on the deck to look at the results.

A large stump and sawdust were all that remained. But the image of the magnificent oak, its colors changing with the seasons, stayed in our minds. "Goodbye dear tree," I called. "We will always miss you."
